Plenty of 15yo 'superstars' who dont develop, dont work hard enough or just lose the physical advantage they may have had over other boys by the time they reach 17. Must be the hardest part of the job but you cant keep them all.
Someone like Declan Rice should be an example for these boys. Dumped by Chelsea at 14 and understand he was one of the last retained in his first couple of years at West Ham. Now he is easily England's best player

How many of our academy players that we released have we regretted?
Ray Houghton was the big one. Apparently John Lyall felt because we had Alan Dickens there wouldn’t be room for Houghton to develop into the first team which was short sighted considering Brooking was coming to the end of his career.
I read that Alvin Martin had a bit of an argument with Lyall at the time because he felt it was a bad decision to release Houghton.
The other one who went on to have a decent career was Matt Holland.

I'm not sure why when we release young players its generally met with derision and a negative perspective aimed at the club.
All clubs are releasing young players all the time. Many young players have talent but then find they aren't physically and mentally up to the rigours of the step up to first team football at the top level.
It's just one of those things.
